SDMS
(Shdowy Digital Making System)
SDMS is a fursuit creation system independently developed by Shadowy Fursuit Studio.
It is a digital twin production system centered on the three elements of 3D printing, 3D modeling, and 3D scanning, which forms the foundation of SFS's technological capabilities.
It is a core production system that is the pride of SFS and the foundation of its technological capabilities, which has broken through the limitations of conventional manual sculpting methods by sculpting and simulating in a virtual space called 3D modeling, bringing the work from the virtual space into reality through 3D printing, or bringing the form of reality into the model through 3D scanning.
The characteristics of this technology can be explained as follows.
1. Realization of perfect left-right symmetry and sculpting with minimal quality fluctuations : Since sculpting work is performed exclusively in 3D modeling, it reduces quality fluctuations caused by various variables such as symmetrical imbalances and condition issues that occur in traditional hand sculpting, making it easy to create sculpting with perfect left-right symmetry.
2. Simple and Reliable Confirmation System : Manual sculpting, such as carving directly using sponges, involves the inconvenience and uncertainty of confirmation. This system drastically reduces such uncertainty and enables simple and reliable confirmation. By recording a video preview after sculpting and sharing it with the client, the creator ensures clear communication, thereby allowing for the coordination of opinions regarding the sculpting to be completed clearly and simply.
3. Perfectly Custom Fit : Based on a wearer dummy copied via 3D scanning, you can easily complete a fit that takes into account the wearer's body shape and character design, simply together with the client.
4. Design made possible by SDMS : We have developed wearer-friendly designs made possible by SDMS, such as the cooling box described later, a head design friendly to glasses wearers, and foot parts with a baseless + sole replacement system.
Features of each part
Head
1. Glasses-friendly : This design was implemented first during the development of the 3D printed head base, allowing the wearer to wear the head while wearing glasses. This design was implemented first because the owner of SFS is a glasses wearer.
2. Cooling Box System : This is SFS's head cooling system, independently developed by drawing inspiration from the cooling structure of a computer case.
To overcome the limitations of conventional internal air circulation methods, it is designed to directly draw in and deliver only external air toward the wearer's face. It is equipped with a total of four coolers: two blow fans to prevent heat from accumulating on the forehead, a blow fan located at the snout to direct air toward the wearer's nose and mouth for comfortable breathing, and a bottom fan attached to the neck fur to reduce the need for a separate fursuit fan.
Through this, the goal is to suppress the accumulation of heat and carbon dioxide inside the head, allowing for comfortable breathing while providing the wearer with a more pleasant wearing environment.
3. Fully Custom Design : Thanks to the development of numerous styles and the structure of the head modeling process, we faithfully design the look the wearer desires. In addition, the confirmation system described above is perfectly applied.
4. Open Back Design : To improve portability, durability, and lightness, the head base was designed with an open back. This allowed for a reduction in volume and weight.
5. Optimized 3D Printing : To enhance durability during print head base printing, we have improved the durability of the head base through extensive know-how, meticulous selection, and optimization ranging from filament selection to print settings.
6. Wide Tolerance : Every wearer has a different face shape and size. Therefore, it is designed to allow for a wide range of internal size adjustments to fit the wearer's face. It is designed to fit the face by adjusting the thickness of the side and top cushions.
7. Standard Lining and Convenient Care : The cushion described above is made of breathable air mesh fabric and is designed to be easily detachable for convenient washing. Additionally, a standard lining is applied to the inside of the head to improve the finish.
tail
1. 3D Modeling-Based Production : The tail parts have evolved from the traditional method of creating them by drawing fabric patterns; we have developed a pattern production method based on 3D modeling and printing. By creating a pattern using taping after modeling and miniature 3D printing, the confirmation system can be applied directly to the tail parts. In the case of a full suit, the pattern can be produced while simulating it to fit the wearer's body.
Feet paws
1. Baseless + Outsole Replacement System : This system was developed through the development of foot parts using SDMS. It has evolved from the existing manufacturing method using a sponge base. The inside of the foot part is filled with cotton to improve comfort, and the foot replacement system allows for both indoor and outdoor use with just one foot part, as well as improved washing, maintenance, and portability.
body
The body is a part at the pinnacle of the SDMS system, where SDMS's 3D scanning technology is fully applied.
The feetpaw parts described earlier are produced together with the body, but here I will explain the pure body parts. For both, the DTD is scanned to refine the data before full-scale production begins.
1. Plantigrade : Due to the nature of solid joints, they are applied only to the tail section. A tail-integrated body part is produced that includes a tail part that fits the wearer's body well, which is copied onto the model via 3D scanning.
2. digitigrade : This is a body that fully incorporates SDMS technology. Based on the DTD copied from the modeling process, the sculpting of the reverse joint sections, taking the wearer's body shape into account, is completed in collaboration with the client before the body parts are finished. This allows for the expression of areas (such as the buttocks) that were previously impossible to represent using conventional methods. Consequently, various fits can be achieved with minimal trial and error.
3. Hybrid Design : Designing solely digitally increases the probability of unexpected errors. To prevent this, body parts are manufactured using a method that reduces errors through analog processing based on digital molding, thereby eliminating problems and improving the level of completeness.
